The Oral Medicine Clinic is designed to diagnose and treat patients with unusual or diagnostically challenging oral lesions or conditions.

Providers treat patients with oral problems associated with systemic diseases and care of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and the oral complications of cancer therapies . We are staffed by clinicians with specialty training and expertise in oral medicine, oral pathology, and oral oncology. We provide care to patients undergoing stem cell transplant, as well as solid organ transplants. Conditions diagnosed and treated by the clinic include:

  • Benign, pre-malignant, and malignant oral lesions
  • Vesiculoulcerative disorders
  • Infections, ulcers or sores of unknown etiology
  • Oral manifestations of systemic and autoimmune diseases
  • Oral manifestations of immunodeficiency
  • Xerostomia
  • "Burning Mouth"
  • Candidiasis

Management of patients with oral complications secondary to cancer therapy might include people who are undergoing or have the following conditions:

  • Radiotherapy or surgery to the head and neck area
  • Chemotherapy
  • Bone marrow transplantation
  • Solid organ transplant
  • Osteoradionecrosis

Patients at risk for radiation caries may be referred to the clinic for any of the following concerns:

  • Evaluations of doses and ports used for radiotherapy
  • Assessment of current status of tissues and potential for healing
  • Recommendations for dental therapy

Depending on the nature of the lesion, patient management may include a biopsy for definitive diagnosis and treatment, or referral to the Shands Hospital Tumor Board where physicians and dentists recommend a consensus for therapy.

How to become a patient

Clinic hours are 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. by appointment. To schedule an evaluation, call (352) 273-6740. If you or your physician wish to fax information, use 352-294-8064. If specific evaluation is needed related to current or future cancer treatment, please specify when you call to schedule the appointment.

Reduced-fee dental care

UF College of Dentistry students and faculty participate in programs such as the We Care Physicians Network (352) 334-7926. Such programs provide limited services for qualified individuals that may be reduced in fees.

Costs, billing, and insurance

We honor all major credit cards, checks and cash for dental payment. If you'd like to pay your bill online, use this secure link. UF employees and their families can pay for their dental care through payroll deduction. Please have your billing statement along with your debit/credit card or bank account information. Your account number is located in the top righthand corner of your statement.
